Nice page.
Attempted the MTloop last Saturday. Not wise, it was the worst weather we'd experienced on the bikes. Only got half of it done, and after stopping at Hebden Bridge, a lift back to the car was the only option.
Looking forward to going out there again soon though, and fingers crossed the weather will be better.

You did well to get half of it done in that diabolical weather,
good luck next time,
Ian.

Ian,
Completed the loop on Monday and what a ride it was. 7 hours in the saddle - oof! I did get lost 3 times and did a total of 55 miles in the end. Navigation was never my strongest skill, next time I'll take friend(s)! The going was heavy due to the rain, but the sun did shine all day :) 2 spokes, 1 puncture, 2 sandwiches, 3 cakes and no lesbians :)
I'll be going back this year.

Well done Phil, 55 miles in 7 hours, that will do nicely! Are you going to take part in the Mary Towneley Challenge, in May? You should do quite well. Ive started training already, atb, Ian.

| is this a pleasent/hard day ride for a reasonably fit cyclist.or is there enough to see and do to split it over 2 days. |

Its a hard days ride, 7 hours at a good pace. I think a very good way to do it would be to start at Waterfoot and finish the first day in Hebden Bridge. Then complete the the loop the next day.

Found your site by a link - which I have completely forgotten. Thankyou for the trails - did half the Dentdale classic - bottom section but aim to do the whole loop one fine winters day soon. |

| Great site Ian. Just what I was searching for - ie what's it like for mountain biking, not horse riding or walking! And it looks superb, so much better than you might expect when looking on the OS map. Thanks for all the work. |

Thanks Jonathan, I have a couple more rides for the site in the pipline at the moment, but a new job has put my plans on hold for the time being.

Great site - useful tips and nice photos.
Did MTL yesterday - a complete and utter epic! Started from Hebden Bridge, going great for 20 miles then knocked snapped the mounting for my rear mech. Managed to tie it to the seat post and set up one (granny) gear, then made it to rawtenstall where the guy managed to bodge a repair with the wrong part.
Six punctures between four of us - but overall a great day out. |

Well done, an epic indeed. Six punctures is unlucky and finding a part to continue the ride is very lucky.

Ian

Did the Mary Townley Loop today 24-9-03 after intending to do for some time. I met Mary several years ago before she died on one of her regular hacks over the water board land. she had an historic right to ride there, others didn't. This all seems to have been clarified now fortunately. I also helped as a volunteer ranger on some of the work on fences, gates, stiles etc around the Lumb Bridleway section. Nice to see my work is still OK. The ride was harder than expected and had me pushing several times. Physically I got quite hypoglycaemic and had to divert to the Alladins Cave at Colden to replenish my blood sugar (amazing shop on a farm). Well worth a visit. Weather was drizzly at first and brightenet later. I hated the bit from Bottomley to Lumbutts. Started from Deerplay (near to home in Weir and went anti-clockwise as this seemed the accepted route. Got lost only once at the top of the climb from Bottomley. Took a brief wrong turn on the Lumb Bridleway ironically. A good day out. I've done the C2C and I must say the Mary Townley Loop is harder mile for mile. Next time I'll take a horse, not my bike.

Wow, well done Alex. I agree the farm shop on Edge Lane is well worth a visit.
You can buy almost anything from there, cups of Tea, Pies, and even copies of MBR. I should put it on the map on the web site.

Ian Wondered if you had come across this link? http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/opencountry_20030830.shtml
I'm planning on doing the Mary Towneley Loop on Friday (hope the weather holds!) and was checking out any latest news about the route and Google threw up the link to the BBC Open Country site. Id come across your excellent route guide before - Ive done all the sections of the route (with a lot of help from your maps and descriptions) but am doing the full thing on Friday. The BBC also obviously like your site! Phil Longworth Huddersfield |

Hope the weather holds for you Phil. As long as it dosent rain on the day you should be alright. The route drains well, with only a few potental boggy bits after and above Holme Chapel. Thanks for the info on the link from the BBC.
Fame at last!

| Hi Ian. We have settled back into our routine here after the SARS virus. Stacy will attend kindergarten school until the end of this month, then go to primary school 1st Sept. Jane's busy as ever at work and I'm just sitting at home keeping cool. Say 'Hi' to the family and I'll give you another nudge when Stacy's website gets the revamp, which is coming along. keep up the good work on your site. |

Good to hear things are getting back to normal over there, I will pass on your regards to the Family.
Stay cool,
