Ian,
tremendously useful site and very inspiring! I am picking off the Loop bit by bit over the winter in prep for a grand all for charity, do it all in a day thing next year.
Sadly due to wet weather, many of the trails are abysmal over winter, and this is especially noticable on trails that were presumably once footpaths, but were changed (in name only) to bridle paths.
The number and standard of gates (varying from selfclosing all the way to one that had hinges of baling twine....) was annoying at times, and signposting is a bit variable as well - but nothing that your excellent map can't put right!
Thankyou for the effort you have put into your site - may I respectfully suggest you amend your MT Loop entry to warn other bikers that it can be hard work in winter?

Thanks Simon, The MTL is hard at the best of times, its best to pick your riding times according to the conditions, wait for a good frost, then attack it. In the meantime, mix well drained trails and tarmac to maintain fittness. I wish you well for the charity ride, and boy is there too many gates on the waterfoot section.
Ian.

Hi Ian I have just been admiring your web site. It is great. A group of ladies have recently completed the Mary Towneley Loop on their ponies to raise funds for a local group to which I belong, The MS/Neuro Self Help Group. (MS stands for multiple sclerosis). I am writing a short piece in a local newsletter to acknowledge their efforts and would be very grateful for your permission to use three of the excellent photos on your web site. With best wishes Judy |

| We, being my husband and I,and our very energetic dog walked all of the loop soon after it was officially opened. We did it in 'bits' when we had time, having two vehicles it made that so much easier as we didn't need to retrace our steps. Sometimes it was fine, sometimes it rained, but as it was summer the surface was firm. We actually live in the village of Water-up the valley from Waterfoot and are so lucky to have all this and the surrounding moors on our doorstep to walk on virtually every day. Long may it be enjoyed and appreciated by travellers! |

I know Water quite well. I have a couple of freinds that live there. You could not be better placed for the Loop. thanks for that,

Ian.

The weather forcast is for a sunny dry day, my favorite type of riding conditions. Hope you have a great day out.
I am torn between doing the loop or going to the Lakes and riding the High Street classic.

| I just found your site by following the link from the harriers website. A freind and I took part in the MTL challenge the other week. It is agony and ecstasy. I am impressed with your site and routes. I live in Waterfoot and although it is a piss poor excuse for a town it has got one thing going for it - Proximity to quality MTB terrain. My favourite four hours is a classic. You might like to try it. I will pass on the route if you are interested. What do you mean by cleaning? I have not heard that before. |

Thanks carl, I agree, Waterfoot is a great MTB location. Please pass on the route, I would love to try it. Cleaning it, means pedaling up a steep hill without putting your foot down. atb, Ian.

Thanks for visiting my site and christening my guestbook. I found your site while searching for sites with a similar theme to mine. I like local history too, but not too keen on bikes after breaking my elbow a few years ago. I like the Accrington pictures on your site. Hope you add more because some of the buildings could get flattened in the future as they are in Blackburn. It would be nice to remember them. Thanks again. Mark. |

Thanks for including details of our challenge on May 9th.We have got lots of entries already mainly from the Yorkshire area, although most people tend to leave it till late or enter on the day.We had a great day last year and are expecting around 300 riders to take up the challenge again this year. Some of the tracks are have remedial work done on them at the moment especially the sticky bit above Water Village. Cheers, Graham Wright Rossendale Harriers |

Thanks Graham, I really enjoyed the ride last year. Well done all the people at Rossendale Harrriers. I can remember last years push through all that gloop above Water. It will be nice to ride the section for a change!
